Inspired By Nature: Microalgae-Based Cement and Concrete

Prometheus Materials, a company based in the United States, has created a replacement for cement that eliminates the carbon-heavy methods of traditional cement manufacturing and mimics the process of carbon sequestration. The product goes by the name of ProZERO^TM, which is an algae-based limestone material engineered for producing environmentally friendly concrete. Microalgae, which is grown in large ponds, captures carbon through the process of photosynthesis, while limestone here is organically generated through algae biomineralization. Thus, the combination of these materials generates a carbon negative cement where carbon is stored indefinitely within the final building product. The properties of this unique material are comparable to traditional cement and comply with industry standards.
